Aurora Firedrake returns in the spellbinding sequel to The Last of the Firedrakes.

The seven kingdoms of Avalonia are crumbling and evil is spreading across the land like a plague. Queen Morgana is close to finding a way to open The Book of Abraxas and it’s only a matter of time until she uses the power trapped inside its pages to enslave the entire world.

With Avalonia growing more dangerous by the day, Aurora must travel through war-torn lands and deep into the heart of the fae kingdom of Elfi. Her goal is to find a legendary weapon infused with the last of the realm’s ancient magic—the only weapon in the world powerful enough to stop the queen.

Aurora might have survived her first battle against Morgana, but the true fight to save her kingdom and restore her throne has only just begun…

The Rise of the Dawnstar is the second novel in the Avalonia Chronicles Series by Farah Oomerbhoy. And just like the first novel, the second book also has a gorgeous cover. It’s stunning!!!

I do have to mention that the writing improved a lot. I remember the first book felt rushed. It usually happens like this. New authors improve a lot after each book they write. 🙂

Now to the actual review.

Plot

The second novel picks up from where the first book ended. Aurora is on the run and is trying to get to her grandmother’s kingdom. Rafe is by her side, as promised. On the way they meet a various of new characters; some are friends, some are foes.

The plot moves forward at a fast paced. It is easy to read even though it’s not a small book.

Characters

New characters are introduced. I will not mention them because that would be too spoilery. Thus I will mention only the ones that also appeared in the last novel.

Aurora – she grows and develops. She’s not that naive anymore, which is good. Aurora’s powers also grow and she tries her best to control them.

Aurora finally accepts her place and position in Avalonia. Therefore, I expect great things from her in the next novel!

P.S. She definitely needs to do a background check on anyone who wants to be her friend! Including family!

Grandmother – I don’t like her, sorry.

Rafe – strong, loyal, brave. I always enjoyed the scenes with him 🙂

Romance

The romance in this novel is complicated. Both Rafe and Aurora have duties to their kingdom which complicates things. Also, not everybody would be thrilled for these two to work out.

I liked the romance part more in this novel. It’s more realistic.

Final Thoughts

Overall, a great continuation to the first novel. The writing and characterization have improved a lot. The plot moves forward at a great pace and secrets are revealed.

I will definitely read the next book in the series. I am real curious to see where the story goes and what will happen with Aurora, Rafe and other characters.
